The Tinian Korean Association recently celebrated the Full Harvest Moon Festival also known as “Chuseok,” an event that occurs on the 15th day of the 8th lunar month.

During the celebration on Tinian’s Kammer Beach Main Pavilion, participants enjoyed a traditional Korean feast, sang songs and played games that went on into the late hours of the evening.

According to TKA president Kim Jin Seup, owner of Kim’s Store, the event is the equivalent of the American Thanksgiving holiday. The day before 14th and 16th of the 8th lunar month are also holidays, giving a total of three days off to allow people time to visit their hometowns.

In Korea, Chuseok is considered one of the most important of all holidays. During this period people jam the highways to visit their hometowns and family members pay respect to their living relatives and visit the graves of their ancestors.

Local residents who participated in the festival said it was a privilege and an honor to have been invited to participate in the Chuseok celebration. (Joey C. Charfauros)
