The Immanuel United Methodist Church recently made available layette sets to the Commonwealth Health Center—a gift from children at the First United Methodist Church in Hershey, Pennsylvania.

The gift—a box of baby blankets, diapers, undershirts, gowns, pajamas, booties and mittens—made up the layette sets that were given to the hospital for the use of needy newborn babies.

The children at the First United Methodist Church in Hershey, Pennsylvania recently had a Vacation Bible School with the theme “Lava, Lava Island.” As part of their VBS, the children voted to support a mission project relating to the island theme and chose the Saipan baby layette project.

Following a recent worship service at the Immanuel Methodist Church on Saipan, Lay Leader Cyndy Tice invited the Sunday School children: “Come, open the huge box of new baby clothes.” The children excitedly looked through the colorful items that made up the layette sets.

Tice explained to the children, “Without this help, some babies might leave the hospital without clothes and diapers to start out their young lives.”

Tice is also president of IUMC’s United Methodist Women and said the women’s group has been providing CHC with layette sets for 10 years. Distribution is completely anonymous and the sets are available to any mothers in genuine need of provisions following the birth of their babies at CHC.

During the past 10 years most of the baby items for the layette sets have been purchased with money from IUMC United Methodist Women’s rummage sales. However, in recent years when church groups in the United States and other countries learned of this project, they wanted to contribute too. Some have knit blankets while others have donated money to purchase baby items here.

Several of CHC’s midwives are active members of IUMC and have delivered many of the babies who have received the layette sets.
