Last day to vote here in Palau primary polls
It’s election year on Palau and the race for the country’s presidency kicks off with a primary election.
Three candidates, including incumbent President Tommy Remengesau, have declared their candidacies and, according to the Palau Consulate Office on Saipan, the primary will determine which two candidates will have their names in the general election ballots this Nov. 2.
Also vying for leadership of the island nation are Ben Roberto of Angaur State and Polycarp Basilius of Melekeok State.
According to the Palau Consulate, about 700 Palauan citizens on Saipan are registered voters; however, only 284 have requested absentee ballots. Several ballots are still expected, though, which may increase the number.
The last day to request for an absentee ballot was Sept. 21.
Several voters have already cast their votes and sent them off to Palau. Those who have yet to do so have until 4:30pm today to cast their votes.
The Palau Consulate was open from 8am to 5pm last Saturday and Sunday for absentee voting.
All ballots must be certified through a Notary Public, which services is also offered at the Consulate office.
As for the general elections, the Palau Consulate office indicated that the office may be used as a polling place. However, confirmation on doing so has yet to be received from Palau.
So far, the Palau Election Commission has 12,922 Palauan voters registered. The number, however, is expected to increase as it does not include all absentee ballot requests.
