Week to highlight NMI’s disaster preparedness
Next week, high school students will witness the CNMI’s emergency responders in special suits, displaying special skills as they demonstrate capability to respond to terrorist attack scenarios.
The activity is part of the CNMI Disaster Preparedness Week, which would run from Monday through Friday, the Emergency Management Office said Friday.
EMO director Rudolfo Pua said the official proclamation signing that would declare the Disaster Preparedness Week would be held at the Aqua Resort Club tomorrow at 10am.
The EMO said the purpose of the proclamation is to promote public awareness and help prepare the public for natural and man-made disasters, including terrorist attacks.
The awareness campaign would also focus on preparedness for disaster situations during typhoons, fire, earthquakes, and tsunamis, among others.
Hazardous materials and terrorism response demonstrations would be conducted at the Southern High School on Wednesday at 10am, the EMO said.
Similar demonstrations will also be conducted at the Mt. Carmel School and Kagman High School on Thursday and Friday at 9am and 11am, respectively.
The recent onslaught of Supertyphoon Chaba has diverted the EMO’s attention to response activities, delaying the celebration of Preparedness Week from the week of 9/11.
Following the World Trade Center attacks, the CNMI worked on strategy development to enhance its preparedness to potential terrorist attacks. Local emergency responders have been undergoing training from various federal agencies—including the Homeland Security Department—to improve preparedness.
