The Saipan Walking Association, Inc. and the Women’s Affairs Office will hold the Heart of the Marianas Fitness Fair Walk two Saturdays from now on Sept. 25 along the Saipan Beach Pathway.

The event starts with registration beginning 5:30am at the Minachom Atdao Pavilion. The walk starts 30 minutes later at 6am. SAIWAI and Women’s Affairs is offering two distances– a short course and a long one.

The short course is a five-kilometer trek to the Japanese Tank and back to the starting point. The long one will have walkers hike all the way to Christo Rai Church in Garapan and back to the Minachom Atdao Pavilion, a distance of 10 kilometers.

After the walk, a health screening will be conducted by the Department of Public Health. Participants would also be treated to live entertainment such as a martial arts demonstration, and an exhibition of various physical exercises. Families also get to have fun, as SAIWAI and Women’s Affair will prepare parlor games.

Those interested in joining the Heart of the Marianas Fitness Fair Walk may contact Ms. Myrna Matagolai at 664-2294 for more information.

Like most SAIWAI activities, the International Federation of Popular Sports or IVV will be sanctioning the Heart of the Marianas Fitness Fair Walk.

IVV members also receive credit for joining the event. The IVV has member-walking clubs in the U.S., Canada, Brazil, Japan, South Korea, Turkey, Nepal, Australia, New Zealand, the CNMI and 29 other European countries.

Other walking events SAIWAI has slated for the rest of the year are the 4th Annual Thanksgiving Day Walk on Nov. 20, and Christmas in the Marianas Walk on Dec. 18.

The Thanksgiving Walk, also known as the Don’t Be a Turkey Walk, is in collaboration with the Public Health Diabetes Group, while SAIWAI has partnered with the Marianas Visitors Authority for the Christmas in the Marianas Walk.

SAIWAI was incorporated as a non-profit corporation on July 27, 2001 and was established to promote public health through non-competitive walking.
