The American Red Cross-NMI Chapter has already managed to raise over $1 million to provide assistance to victims of Supertyphoon Chaba.

Its latest boost came courtesy of Mobil Oil Mariana Islands Inc., which donated $20,000 yesterday morning at the American Red Cross-NMI Chapter headquarters in Dandan.

Mobil president Jeff Borja was on hand to present the check and explain that the gift to the ARC Disaster Relief Fund aims to assist those who are in need as they rebuild their lives.

“This is a small donation on behalf of Mobil Oil here in the Mariana Islands. Our thoughts are with the people of the CNMI who are in need of assistance. We applaud the Red Cross for its swift response, and thank the many volunteers who continue to help those in need,” he said.

Borja said Mobil, which has been providing petroleum products and services to customers in the CNMI for over 35 years, recognizes the impact contributions from businesses have on displaced members of the community.

“Having operated on Rota, Tinian, and Saipan for decades, we understand that contributions from businesses to organizations like the Red Cross have immediate benefit to those who have been displaced,” he said.

ARC-NMI Chapter board chair Jocelyn Deleon Guerrero expressed delight over Mobil’s gift, saying, “We are so grateful for the $20,000 commitment [yesterday] from Mobil Oil Mariana Islands Inc. to assist the American Red Cross respond to those people whose lives were devastated by what Supertyphoon Chaba delivered,” she said. “American Red Cross relies on the generosity of our corporate friends such as Mobil to help our organization provide food, clothing, and counseling to disaster victims and enable us to remain in the affected disaster area for as long as it takes to help people recover and build.”

Also on hand for the presentation were Mobil public relations, and government affairs manager Cecile B. Suda, Red Cross board director Juan Guerrero, and Red Cross executive director John Hirsh.
