The Commonwealth Health Center medical staff donated over $500 to the American Red Cross-NMI Chapter yesterday afternoon to help the victims of Supertyphoon Chaba.

According to Department of Public Health chief of staff Marek A. Rozwadowski, the funds for the donation came “from a fund administered by the medical staff executive.”

“Some individual physicians have made their own donations to the American Red Cross. These donations are not reflected in this group’s donation and would be in addition to this donation,” he said.

ARC-NMI Chapter executive director John I. Hirsh, along with board chair Jocelyn Guerrero, received the donation at the DPH office.

“We just can’t thank the medical staff here at CHC enough,” Hirsh said. “They’ve been very supportive of our whole disaster program… The Hillbloom Foundation played an important role in funding some of the prenatal equipment that the Red Cross donated to the hospital, and it’s just great to see the hospital staff recognizing the good work that we’re doing here in the community.”

The American Red Cross has already issued over $1 million in total assistance to the victims of the supertyphoon.

Earlier, Hirsh disclosed that the Red Cross disaster relief drive raised $156,000 in cash and about $70,000 more in donations from local businesses and community members. About $150,000 would be sent to the national organization for use in future disasters.

The national fund was the source of the $1.4 million that was budgeted for relief efforts following Chaba, which hit the islands last month and damaged or destroyed about 1,388 homes in the Commonwealth.
