After waiting for months to compete in the sport that put Saipan on the map, Rocballers took to the court at Marianas High School yesterday afternoon to display the game of islands fame.

In the first game of the year, the boys of Bwii Bwii knocked off Mwaliyas, 45-38, over the span of four back and forth sets to get their season off to a good start. Members of both teams were on the court practicing well before the 12:30pm start time, but it was the twin Bwii’s that day got off to a good start when they mauled the Mwali’s 15-6 in the first set.

The mighty men of Mwaliyas bounced back in the second set to beat Bwii Bwii 15-12 with terrific team play, but their success was short lived. The B-men brushed the dirt off of their shoulders and hand delivered Mwaliyas a second set setback, 16-9.

The teams cruised into the fourth and final set with the B-Team leading 45-30, but the Mwaliyas needed to pick up a win in order to force overtime. Between the crash of thunder that shook the skies and the few minutes remaining until the third period of school got underway, it didn’t look good for the Mwaliyas.

Mwaliyas smacked the ball and the Bwii Bwii around in the fourth to take an 8-2 lead, but that was as far as they would get, as the siren sounded the kids back to class.

Overall, Bwii Bwii had six aces and five kees, while Mwaliyas had four aces, three kees, and a xunk.

The first Heavy Hitter of the year was Shane Yamada of Bwii Bwii. Yamada tallied 12 points on the day with four aces and a pair of kees to lead the B-men.

The action of Rocball continues this afternoon at MHS court, as the second day of aces, xunks, kees, and goals gets underway at 12:30pm.
