Rota Resort, JED’s net top awards in opener

Rota Resort and Country Club and JED’s/Aqua took home the major awards during the opening ceremony of the 2004 Pilpino Lakas Pagkakaisa Foundation OFW Basketball League held last Sunday at the Rota Recreation Center.

Wearing simple and uncomplicated, cream-colored jerseys with their sponsor’s name and crest emblazoned on the front, Rota Resort was adjudged Best in Uniform topping the three other teams competing in this year’s basketball competition.

Statuesque Kim Barroma of JED’s, meanwhile, charmed her way to the hearts of the judges and walked away with Best Muse honor.

Other beauties that participated in the Best Muse contest were Sandra Lynn Arnold of Rota Resort, Sheena Gubar of Pizzaria, and Mary Ann Mangaong of Guiang.

Sen. Diego M. Songao graced the opening ceremony and served as guest speaker. He was joined on center court by PLPF president Joselito D. Mendoza.

All four teams did the traditional parade to the Rota Recreation Center. Coach and captain ball for Rota Resort are Bobot Baccay and Rodel Manuel. Serving as mentor and skipper of JED’s are Marlon Sison and Rick Gatuaban. Renato Camacho and Jesus Amaga are coach and captain of Pizzaria, respectively, while issuing instructions and acting as the coach on the floor for Guiang are Glenn Guiang and Loreto Clitar.

The managers for the four teams are Rota Resort management (Rota Resort), Mr. and Mrs. Semoichi Ishimaru and Brenda Cing (JED’s), Mr. and Mrs. Jack Manglona (Pizzaria), and Efren Hipolito and Flor Guiang (Guiang).

On the games that followed, Rota Resort downed JED’s, 77-66, in the curtain raiser. The nightcap then had Pizzaria rout Guiang, 84-61. Games are played every Sunday with the first game scheduled at 10am followed by the second game at 1pm.

The 2004 PLPF OFW Basketball League will use a double elimination round format. The top team after the eliminations will advance to the finals, while the second and third-ranked teams will battle for the second finals spot. The 2004 championship will be a best-of-three affair.

Miller Lite Beer and Mid-Pac Guam are the main sponsors of the 2004 PLPF OFW Basketball League.
