For many years now, the Carolinian community within the Commonwealth would take time each year to reflect and pay tribute to Chief Aghurubw, who is credited with bringing the first Carolinian settlers to the Marianas.

History has it that in 1815, Chief Aghurubw of the Ghatoliyool Clan sailed from the Caroline Islands to resettle his people on Saipan after the islands were destroyed by a major typhoon.

In keeping with the traditional tribute, the Chief Aghurubw Foundation announced that the 34th Annual Commemoration of Chief Aghurubw would take place this Saturday, Sept. 18, at Managaha Island.

The selection of the date was based on the time the chief’s monument on the island was finished. The monument was constructed in honor of the chief who, according to the foundation, “changed the course of history in the lives of his people.”

The commemoration is part of the celebration of September as Cultural Heritage Month, which was declared through a proclamation last Aug. 31 by Gov. Juan N. Babauta.

“Cultural Heritage Month serves several purposes,” a part of the proclamation read. “First it provides a framework for many different cultural activities by different indigenous groups and individuals. Second, our indigenous cultures enhance the attractiveness, charm, and uniqueness of our islands, which are of interest to our visitors and tourists. Third, and most importantly, Cultural Heritage Month helps us preserve our cultures and traditions by passing them on to younger generations.”

Due to the Commonwealth’s two indigenous people, Babauta said each group will be given a week to celebrate and showcase their cultures.

Further, Babauta also declared that Sept. 26 shall be dedicated to Chief Aghurubw, as well as all traditional chiefs. The Chief Aghurubw Foundation also disclosed that a special Mass will be held on that date in honor of all the chiefs.

Meanwhile, boat transfers to Managaha Island for the commemoration will be provided by Tasi Tours and Transportation Inc. and Saipan Sea Ventures (Jambalaya).

Tasi Tours will transport interested individuals to Managaha at the Inner Smiling Cove Marina at 8am, with return scheduled for 1:30pm.

Saipan Sea Ventures will leave from the Outer Cove Marina at 8am and 8:45am to Managaha. Return trips are scheduled for 3pm and 3:45pm.
