All schools soccer tourney on the way
David Beckham, Mia Hamm, Kristine Lilly, Brandi Chastain.
These are familiar names when it comes to striking a ball for a goal on the soccer fields, and in the near future, more names are expected to be added to that list.
What makes it even sweeter is that the names will be of local youngsters participating in the upcoming all schools soccer tournament expected to unfold this month and continue through October.
Formerly known as The McDonald’s Cup and the DFS Galleria Cup the past two years, the event has yet to land a sponsor, however, officials have indicated that the issue is currently being addressed.
The tournament is open to students 12 years of age and younger from both public and private schools. Coaches are encouraged to begin organizing teams for the competition.
Last year, the Tinian Strikers reigned supreme in the boys category, defeating Garapan Elementary School in a kickoff after regulation ended with a 0-0 score. Tinian’s Peter Cepeda prevented Garapan kickers from scoring a goal in sudden death, while Aran Evangelista kicked in the winning goal. Gregorio T. Camacho Elementary School took third while Garapan Elementary School Team B placed fourth. Fifth to eighth place for the boys division were occupied by the following: Whispering Palms School; Garapan C; William S. Reyes Elementary School; and NMC Lab School.
The Kingfishers, for their part, topped a fighting Tinian Strikers team in the finals, 2-0, to annex the girls’ championship.
Tinian had to settle for second place, while third went to GES Nganga. NMC Lab School was fourth, followed by GES Mallards, GES Quackers, GTC and GES Ducklings.
