Arirang rises to the top in Onwel Cup

While many people around the island were enjoying the type of sunny day that had eluded Saipan for weeks, teams from the Korean Soccer Association of Saipan and the Onwell Manufacturing Inc. competed upon the field of Hopwood Junior High School in the 2004 Onwel’s Cup Tournament.
Drums were pounding and soccer songs filled the air on Sunday, Aug. 29, as Arirang out kicked the competition to take first place with a record of 2-0-1 in the daylong event, finishing just ahead of the second place Victory (1-1-1). The Amazing A’s took to the field with Onwel’s B-team to kick off the tournament, only to walk away with a 1-1 tie, but they tightened up their defense in their second game.
Arirang didn’t allow a goal as they edged out the Onwel A-team 1-0, and they were gaining momentum as they were tied for first place heading into their final match with their rivals from Team Victory. The battle for first between the Korean powerhouses was settled when Arirang vaulted over Victory by out scoring the talented squad 3-1.
For their efforts, Arirang took the first place trophy and $200 in cash, while second place Victory and Third place Onwel B took home $150 and $100 in cash r, respectively, in addition to trophies.
Arirang had more reasons to celebrate when two of their players were recognized for their individual achievements and awarded with gifts and trophies. Kim Kwang Sik of Arirang was named the tournament’s most valuable player, while teammate Kim Myung Kwan was tabbed as the day’s top defender. Top honors also went out to Jang Sun Sik of Victory for Sportsmanship, as well as Onwel’s Sunmon and Dum. Sunmon lead the tournament in goals scored while Dum was named the top goaltender.
