Although the weather has relented for the past couple of days, it seems that so much damage has been done to the Oleai Sports Complex that the scheduled sporting events will continue to be postponed.

The president of the Saipan Softball Association, Robert A. Guerrero, was optimistic last week when he said that the 2004 Men’s Island Wide Fast Pitch and Slow Pitch Softball Leagues would resume play yesterday, but unfortunately the games were kept on hold.

Last night the DCCA and Guerrero attempted to test out the lights to see just how much damage was sustained during the high winds and rain of Supertyphoon Chaba. Either way, the field was still too muddy for a game of softball to be played and probably will be for a while.

Another factor in the equation is the evacuees currently residing inside the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium. Joey Dela Cruz of the DCCA said that it could be at least a month before the complex could open its doors to a sporting schedule because of the special situation.

Guerrero remains hopeful that the games will start again soon, stating that the players should be back on the field sooner than Dela Cruz predicts.

“If the lights are working and the field dries up, then we could probably get the games underway soon, but I understand the situation here. The people working at the gym are giving priority to the people living there, which they should,” said Guerrero.
