Point Breakers thrill at the PIC

Four rounds down and only one surf-stravaganza to go in the Point Break Series Challenge at the Pacific Islands Club, and the same names are making more ripples in the waves on the Flow Rider than Oprah doing a cannonball.

Round Four of the Series got underway last Saturday, Aug. 28, and didn’t miss a beat as the cast of mini-surfers hailing from Saipan’s shores once again ruled the competition.

Cal Ronan has been chasing off any would-be opponents with his wave-borne wizardry in the Men’s 12-and-under, and he rolled solo once again to take the one day total with a 74. C-Ro has increased his point total in every round in the series, and he will easily walk away with the overall title this year. Ronan leads the division with a four round total of 279.

In the Men’s 13-17 division, there is a trio of tricksters that always vie for the top spot, as Tirso “TJ” Adriatico, Wylie Paez and Fredo Paez have been side by side for the past three rounds. The only difference this time was that Fredo bested TJ for the first time in the series.

Wylie walked away with the daily high of 82, just three points ahead of the Fredo-nator (79), and eight more than TJ. With the win, Wylie edged one point in front of TJ’s 312 with a 313 to take the overall series lead, but Fredo is still in the race with a 294.

The entire series will come down to the rider with the best performance roughly two weeks from now.

The challenge’s only female added some grace to competition, but she was turning heads with the gnarly tricks that she was bustin’ on the waves of whitewater. Keisha Paez was once again the only entrant in the Women’s 13-17 division, and she continued to perform at a level that makes the boys jealous. She was guaranteed a title championship weeks ago, but Keisha returned to Point Break to rip some more curls en route to her overall total of 278.

For the second straight week, there was a mini-let down when neither of the entrants showed for the Men’s 18-and-over. Jerald Domingo and Sung Ik “Crono” Lee are known for their amazing tricks and their displays of sportsmanship, but they were nowhere to be found.

If you haven’t yet been down to try the Flow Rider at the PIC, you are truly missing out. Riders can still compete in the final event of the season on Saturday, Sept. 11.

There are singles, doubles and big trick competitions throughout the tri-month series that is sponsored in part by Coca Cola. Men and women will be grouped into age divisions 12-and-under, 13-17, 18-34, and 35-and-over, and as of press time, there are still some openings available.

To be a part of all of the action, venture down PIC information counter and pick up an entry form. It’s only $10 to enter the event, and that includes special discounts, and PIC facility privileges.
