An open letter to Cinta
Dear Ms. Kaipat,
Future generations will salute your efforts to protect Pagan. Several years ago as a member of the Traditional Seafaring Society, I was granted the privilege of visiting Pagan. Every member of our group was deeply touched by Pagan’s majestic beauty and magic. I regret that only those who have been there can fully understand this. Pagan is a precious treasure.
Mining Pagan pozzolan may be best for the CNMI, but only with careful measured steps. Is the contract the best deal that the CNMI can make for all the people and especially for those with roots in the Northern Islands? Is the contract the best deal for post-mining restoration of the land and sea environment? The focus must be on long -term gain.
The pozzolan is not going anywhere. Why not take the time for thoughtful studies by impartial experts in the mining business and environmental science? Pagan deserves an informed unbiased decision.
Our Guam seafarers look forward to working with the CNMI seafarers in reviving the proud seafaring tradition of the Mariana Islands.
