The 2004 UFO-San Miguel Cup heats up tonight as two teams battle for the last remaining semifinals slot.

After suffering losses last weekend, both SMF-Seabridge and FASA-CNC Inc. find themselves in a do-or-die battle, with the loser packing up for the season.

With that, a dog-fight is expected to ensue beginning at 7pm at the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium.

Originally, the final slot was to be battled between three teams, however, league officials indicated yesterday that NMBA-Aliviera Sports Bar formally withdrew from the competition due to conflict in work schedules.

Already securing berths in the semifinals, which unfolds this Sunday, were powerhouses RP Cabalen-Transamerica/EC COMM, SIP-Verizon, and Visminda-Country House. All three have 3-0 records in the second round.

Officials also released the format for Sunday’s matches.

Seeing action in the first game are Visminda and the winner of the FASA-SMF bout, while Cabalen and SIP square off in the nightcap. Tip off for the first game is at 4pm, while the second game is scheduled to kick off at 6pm.

SIP earned their spot after crushing SMF 128-77 last Sunday behind a balanced attack courtesy of veterans Leo Factor, Peter Mendiola, Rick Alegre, Brian Flores, and James Villacrusis. Also playing big roles were Jason Amado and G. Garcia.

For their part, Visminda relied on a hefty performance by towers Ed Cosino, Dado Vistal, and Jawn Joyner to pull out a nail-biting 106-100 win over FASA.

Visminda rallied from an early deficit, then held off a late charge by Andres Estolas, Errol Peredo, and Kevin Cequena to leave with the win.

Cabalen broke into the semis after NMBA lost by default on Saturday.
