Saipan soldier honored

The 8th Saipan and Northern Islands Municipal Council has adopted a resolution commending U.S. Army First Sgt. Nicolas M. Sablan for completing his required active service and for being honorably discharged from the U.S. Army.

According to the resolution, Sablan’s military service brings national honor and distinction to the people of the CNMI who are in the U.S. Armed Forces.

Sablan was born on March 9, 1962, and is the son of former congressman Gregorio Bermudes and Frances Cabrera Muna Sablan of Saipan. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in October 1983 and completed required active service on April 28, 2004.

Sablan served a tour duty in Iraq from March 2003 to April 2004. He is a recipient of several decorations, medals, badges, citations and campaign ribbons awards, including the Bronze Star Award; Army Commendation Medal (2nd Award); Army Reserve Achievement (4th Award); Army Good Conduct Medal (3rd Award); Army Reserve Components Achievement Medal (4th Award); National Defense Service Medal (2nd Award); Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal; Korean Defense Service Medal; Armed Forces Reserve Medal; W/M Device, Non Commissioned Officer’s Professional Development Ribbon; Army Service Ribbon; Army Reserve Components Overseas Training Ribbon; Expert Infantryman Badge; Parachutist Badge; Air Assault Badge; Driver and Mechanic Badge with Driver-W Bar.

His home of record is Flagstaff, Arizona, and was separated at Fort Bliss, Texas.

“The members of the municipal council and the people of the CNMI, together with [Sablan’s] family members, are extremely proud of [his] military achievements…and wish him the best in whatever endeavors he undertakes after being honorably discharged from the U.S. Army,” part of the resolution reads.

The resolution was certified by municipal council chair Gregorio V. Deleon Guerrero and vice chair David A. Indalecio and was attested by secretary Antonia M. Tudela.
