Sablan, Camacho, Flores hoist monthly titles
From a senior golfer to May Ace of the Month, that is how Nick Sablan’s day turned out during the Refalewasch Golf Association’s May Ace of the Month last July 24 at the Coral Ocean Point Golf Resort.
Hot on his trail was Joe Camacho, who captured the association’s June Ace of the Month.
Both 2003 South Pacific Games veterans were tied with a net score of par 72. But Sablan took home the title via a scorecard tiebreak.
Sablan carded a 3-over par 39 compared to Camacho’s 40 in the front. He followed that up with a back nine score of 2-over par 38 to finish with a gross of 77, and with his 5 handicap, Sablan was good for a net score of 72.
Kamikaze kept up the heat in the back by carding three birdies, one bogey for a 2-under par 34 and a gross of 74 and with his slim 2 handicap, he tied Sablan for the lowest net of the day, but got the shorter end of the deal when RGA looked at the cards to break the tie.
Not to be forgotten and not to be denied was Joe “Chuparium” Wabol, who carded a strong net score of 2-over par 74 inspite of his senior citizen tag.
Everybody thought that he hung up his golfing hat and stored away his expensive clubs, but the feisty Wabol came back strong.
But since Wabol already won a monthly title this year, RGA had no choice but to award the July title to Vietnam War veteran and World Series-bound Sonny Flores, who came out of nowhere to surprise everyone.
In the accuracy department, Camacho knocked it close on the 3rd hole to earn him the closest to the pin award, while Jess Wabol was the winner on the 14th.
RGA also welcomed Henry Sese, a native of the American Samoa, who came out to join the association in a round of golf.
RGA would also like to extend its congratulations to the winners of the San Roque Church fundraising event last July 25, especially Camacho, who finished a single stroke behind eventual winner Edward Manibusan to finish place second, while Jess Wabol won third place.
Hats off also to all the winners in the 9th Annual Tournament of Champions. Joe Camacho captured first place in the Championship Flight. Oliver Sasaki also deserves some credit after sandbagging his way to fifth place on the same flight
But the biggest round of applause goes to RGA’s own Alex Aquiningoc who luckily holed out the 17th in the West Course. He walked away with a brand new SUV to replace his 1965 Sentra that up to now, 39 years later, he still makes payments for at the bank.
Apparently, somebody overheard him during the TOC banquet that he is selling his 1965 Sentra to Tony Satur at a reasonable price.
RGA would also like to announce its upcoming August monthly ace tourney scheduled for next Saturday, Aug. 17, at the Coral Ocean Point Golf Resort. Check in time is at 11:30am and tee time is set for 12:30pm.
Space is limited to the first 16 participants, so members are encouraged to report early to secure a slot. For more details, please contact Jess Wabol at 826-8717; Tony Satur at 888-3324; or Sonny Flores at 234-1748.
