Jake Jobol Eo, the Marshallese Club of Orange County, California, met last weekend with David Cohen, Deputy Assistant Secretary of the Interior for Insular Affairs, to discuss the involvement of Marshall Islands citizens in a conference showcasing business opportunities in the islands.

Governors of the territories and presidents of the island nations, high-level federal representatives of business, trade and export agencies, and successful businesspeople from across the United States and the islands are expected at the 2004 Conference on Business Opportunities in the Islands, to be held Sept. 23 and 24 at the Marriott Hotel in downtown Los Angeles.

The conference, sponsored by Secretary of the Interior Gail Norton, promotes “win-win opportunities for both the mainland and the Islands,” according to the department.

The conference will highlight businesses from the seven jurisdictions under the responsibility of the department—Guam, the U.S. Virgin Islands, the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, American Samoa, the Republic of Palau, the Republic of the Marshall Islands and the Federated States of Micronesia.

“The islands offer American companies excellent contracting opportunities,” Norton said in announcing the conference. “The federal government recently agreed to send $3.5 billion in grants to the Marshall Islands and the Federated States of Micronesia alone over the next 20 years. We send hundreds of millions of dollars out to the islands every year.”
