Point Breakers thrill at PIC
Two rounds down and three to go in the Point Break Series Challenge at the Pacific Islands Club, and no matter how much water flows through the park, the competition continues to heat up.
Round 2 of the Series got underway last Saturday, and the action picked up right where it left off two weeks earlier, as just about all of the riders improved their scores.
Cal Ronan was surfing unopposed in the Boy’s 12-and-under, and he just may have scared off the competition with the moves he was pulling off. Ronan upped his score to 67 for an overall total of 133 in the five-round wave-a-thon.
While Ronan wrapped up his age group, the Boy’s 13-17 division was not so easy to call. Tirso “TJ” Adriatico, Wylie Paez, Fredo Paez, and Takayuki Sinozaki went wave-to-wave in some of the night’s hottest competition. Sinozaki threw his board out in front of him and clapped a few times before the water brought it back. Splashing around was no problem for him as he easily threw water from side to side. The walk-on guest was vacationing and finished with a score of 69 in his first appearance of the PBSC.
Fredo Paez is no stranger to the event, and he proved that he only gets better as time goes on. Paez pulled out some flips, splashes, and rolls en route to raising his score from 65 to a 73. Progress is nothing new for the Paez family, as brother Wylie was the most improved rider from last week. Paez ripped more surf, caught more air, and landed more tricks than just about everybody as he raised his score from a 69 last week to tie the evening high of 79 for a two-day total of 148.
Paez was rivaled only in the division by TJ Adriatico, but these two were more interested in cheering each other on than trying to beat one another. Adriatico was everywhere, pulling tricks whenever there was water under his board. He busted out rolls, waterfalls, flips, and some moves that are simply indescribable.
Adriatico raised his level from a 76 to a 79 for a combined 155 to lead the entire field, but it was Keisha Paez that showed the most spirit as the only entrant in the Girl’s 13-17 division. Paez was cheered on by all of the riders as she made moves that made the boys blush. She had a couple of spills, but she more than made up for them with the thrills.
Paez continued the family tradition as she went from a 67 the last time out to a 71 for a total of 138.
It was a reversal of fortunes in the Mens’ 18-and-over as Jerald Domingo and Sung Ik “Crono” Lee showed the youngin’s how to get it done. Though the two were competing in the division, they were doing everything that they could to help each other perform the more complicated tricks.
Domingo threw out inner-tubes so that Crono could flip over them while the yellow-haired Crono held out the two-man tube for Domingo’s release and flip. These two demonstrated expert techniques; Crono as the insane trickster and Domingo as the master of control. Neither of them feared the guardrail, hopping over it like it wasn’t even there.
It was almost too close to call, but Crono pulled out a couple more ticks to win 78-74. Domingo still leads in the division by a score of 152 to Crono’s 148, but there’s still three more dates set.
The Series began Saturday, July 17, when Cal Ronan, Tirso Adriatico, Jerald Domingo, and Keisha Paez took first place in their respective divisions. Each of the rider had three one-minute rounds to show off their moves. With three more competitions, the titles in each class are still very much up for grabs.
If you haven’t yet been down to try the Flow Rider at the PIC, you are truly missing out. Riders can still compete on Aug. 14 and 28, and Sept. 11.
There are singles, doubles and big trick competitions throughout the tri-month series that is sponsored in part by Coca Cola. Men and women will be grouped into age divisions 12-and-under, 13-17, 18-34, and 35-and-over, and as of press time, there are still some openings available.
To be a part of all of the action, venture down the PIC information counter and pick up an entry form. It’s only $10 to enter in any one of the events, but $30 will grant you access to all five surf-off’s, special discounts, and PIC facility privileges.
