The next Volunteer Examiner session offered by W5YI-VE, sponsored by MDX Amateur Radio Club, would be held on Aug. 4, Wednesday, from 6pm to 9pm at the ground floor of the Nauru Building Community Center.

Walk-ins will be accepted although pre-registration is encouraged. Those in the technician class, who want to be upgraded, must bring an original and one photocopy of their FCC license and any applicable CSCEs.

A valid ID will also be required. If you do not have a photo ID, bring two ID forms at least one of which shows your current mailing address. The 2004 exam fee is $12 for all examinees.

There are currently three different written and one telegraphy (Morse code) examinations. The (multiple-choice) written examinations are Elements 2 (Technician), Elements 3 (General), and Elements 4 (Extra Class.). The requirement for the beginning Technician Class license is passing the 35-question exam Element 2. An examinee passes a multiple-choice written exam if he or she answers 75 percent of the questions correctly. The higher class licenses no longer require Morse code receiving proficiency at 13 or 20 words-per-minute.

The exam session will be administered by VEs under the W5YI Volunteer Coordinator.

VEs wanting to assist in the exams should bring their VE IDs. Only VEs with valid ID are allowed inside the examination session.
