Verizon and Islanders rack up wins

The Verizon Sluggers came from behind to swat the C-Bees 4 13-10, while the Islanders were able to dispatch Kagman 1-2-3 by a 7-2 score on Monday night in the continuation of the 2004 Men’s Island Wide Fast Pitch Softball season at the Oleai Sports Complex.

The first game of the night featured a powerful Verizon squad and the coachless C-Bees 4. The coach of the blue was busy cheering on his son in the Asia/Pacific Baseball Tournament in Guam, and the players sorely missed his presence.

The C-Bees jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the third before Verizon answered with a run in the fifth. It looked as if the outcome of the game had already been decided as the C’s tallied another pair before inning end, but that’s when the rain began to fall.

Up 7-1, the blue crew ran back onto the field when the drops stopped falling, but they left their game in the dugout. Verizon rallied to score six runs and tightened the clamps on defense to force extra innings.

In the eighth, the lords of long-distance dialed up another six runs to take a 13-6 lead, and that was all that they needed as the C-Bees 4 could manage only three runs.

In the second game, the speedy Mel Teregeyo hit a three-run inside-the-park homer to put the Islanders on the board in the first inning, and that was more than Kagman 1-2-3 scored all game.

Teregeyo would figure again in the scoring when he led off the sixth inning with a triple and was later knocked home by a sacrifice fly off the bat of Reno Celis.

Ben Duenas, Manny Tenorio, and Jack Reyes each picked up an RBI for the Islanders in the victory over the homesteaders.

There’s plenty more fast pitch action coming your way as the 2004 Men’s Island Wide Fast Pitch Softball League continues tonight at 6:30pm in Oleai, and every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday night throughout the season.
