The Superior Court the other day imposed a $15,000 bail on a 37-year-old man accused of stabbing another man who had screamed in anger after having a fight with his wife.

Associate Judge Kenneth Govendo earlier set a $25,000 bail for the temporary release of Rudy Sablan Pangelinan, who was charged with assault and battery, and assault with a dangerous weapon.

But during a hearing on Tuesday, Govendo reduced the bail to $15,000 and ordered Pangelinan to either make a full payment in cash, or pay 10 percent on the bond and post a collateral bond to cover the other 90 percent.

Pangelinan’s family agreed to post its leased property in San Jose, which earns a $550 monthly rental fee. The court would forfeit the property, including rent, if Pangelinan fails to appear in any of his court hearings or violates any of his bail conditions.

Pangelinan, a fishery technician at the Division of Fish and Wildlife, is accused of stabbing Redson Robert Herwin in San Jose on Sunday night.

Herwin, 34, was brought to the Commonwealth Health Center after he sustained two puncture wounds on the back and another stab wound on the left tricep.

According to a police report, Herwin had an argument with his wife after he went drinking since morning on Sunday.

Herwin told police he decided to leave the house to avoid creating further problems with his wife. While he was walking in the western direction between Downtown Market and Morgen Building, he screamed out in anger.

The alleged victim said he heard someone later identified as Pangelinan screaming back at him. Herwin then walked toward Diamond Karaoke to check who was shouting at him, and saw Pangelinan shouting profanity at him.

He approached Pangelinan, but while he was walking up the stairway, Pangelinan attacked him. Herwin said he also hit Pangelinan to protect himself.

Herwin’s brother came and escorted him back to his residence.

When a responding police officer arrived, Pangelinan told him that he got the abrasion on his forehead when he fell on the stairway. But witnesses told police that Pangelinan had been involved in the fight.

Also Tuesday, Govendo set a $10,000 cash bail for Rodrick Daniel, who was accused of striking someone on a forehead and attempting to hurt him with a knife.
