LITERARY NOOK

A COVID cabin fever believer

“If I am killed, I can die but once; but to live in constant dread of it, is to die over and over again.”
—Abraham Lincoln

I’m afraid of dying, I thought I wasn’t for a while
felt I could easily go on until my last dying breath
just grin and bear it with an all knowing smile
after reading Ernest Becker’s The Denial of Death.

COVID-19 is now here, a worldwide pandemic crisis
an invisible viral enemy feared as never before
no banquets or buffets with Bacchus or Dionysus
now a box of charity food comes to your locked door.

German poet/author Thomas Mann wrote in his play
“Man is Man that’s what counts goddamn!” and
“I can’t move forward, and I can’t move back.”
Covid 19 seems to give social distancing little slack.
Then there are fools who won’t wear a protective mask
that might save a family member’s life. Not a hard task.
