It is that time of the year when Pacifica Insurance Underwriters Inc. calls on all local artists from Rota, Tinian and Saipan to tell their stories in a form of art through its 9th Annual Pacifica Art Contest.

This year’s theme of “Living COVID-19 Safe” resonates with everyone in the Marianas, as we continue to mitigate the spread of the coronavirus and find ways to keep things normal and at bay. The contest will be duplicating previous art contest categories, mediums with the same submittal parameter requirements, all of which will be judged by their individual creativity and originality, quality of artwork, the piece’s relevance to this year’s theme, and its overall presentation.

As it is the primary goal of PIUI, children and adolescents ages 6 through 17 and adults will be given another opportunity to make art history by demonstrating their talents with the incentive of winning a cash prize and gifts.

“These past couple of years have only proven the CNMI to be rich in talent. Every single piece submitted previously were a literal work of art, a masterpiece. We hope to continue the momentum of nurturing talent and creating an avenue for all young artists to express their God-given talents. With this year’s theme, we guarantee that every art piece will wow the audience [and], above all, convey the message that the only way to live today is to live COVID-19 safe,” said PIUI president and CEO Shirley Sablan. “I would also like to extend my sincerest si yu’us ma’ase to every educator, school administrator, and member of the media who have helped us over the years to promote this program. You are all what makes for a good, meaningful partnership that move mountains.”

The contest will have three allowable mediums: traditional, digital and three-dimensional. The traditional medium will be open only to ages 6 to 17 years, while the digital and three-dimensional mediums will welcome artists of all ages.

Mediums for the traditional category include pen, paint, charcoal, oil pastel, crayons, and color pencil. Mediums for the digital category must be in the form of digital photography, video (not to exceed 30 seconds) and two-dimensional/graphics. And just added to the program last year, the three-dimensional category will once again give artists of all ages a chance to compete in a physical art piece category with their 3D pieces.

Submittals must include the artist’s full name, age, school name (if applicable), telephone number, mailing and email addresses. Deadline for submission will be on Sept. 23, 2022, at 4pm at the PIUI office in Susupe.

Pacifica Art Contest is a visual arts competition and a program created by PIUI designed to nurture and support local talent and the arts in the CNMI.
