The Chalan Kanoa Saints and the Spiders took separate paths in advancing to the semifinals of the 2004 Island-wide Village Youth Basketball League Tuesday night at the Garapan court.

In the first game, the Spiders had the Sixers stuck on their webbing as early as the first quarter en route to scoring a lopsided 40-24 victory.

The Spiders opened up a 9-2 lead after the first quarter and then extended that advantage to 9 points at halftime.

It was a 28-18 spread after three quarters of play and the Spiders took the jugular in the fourth doubling up the Sixers 12-6 to win the game running away.

Alexio King was the highpoint man for the Spiders with 10 points, while Calvin Fejeran and Ryan Manglona added 6 markers apiece. Randolph Ferrer also scored 10 points in the loss for the Sixers.

While, the Spiders had a cakewalk in the curtain raiser, the Saints had to dig themselves out of an early hole and endured two overtimes to nip Chalan Kanoa Kings 89-88.

Regulation ended in a 65-all tie and the first overtime also came and went with both Saints and Kings still knotted up at 77-all.

But in the second overtime, Joe Kim scored all of the Saints’ 12 points – including the clinching free throws – to lead his team to victory.

The Kings got off on the right foot and took the first quarter 17-6. But the Saints fought back in the second and managed to trim their deficit to 2 points, 27-29, at the turn.

It was 34-all after three quarters of play and both teams would again find themselves deadlocked after 32 minutes of regulation and five more minutes in the first overtime.

Kim had a game-high 47 points to pace the Saints, while Lam Reyes and Roy Norita added 11 and 10 points, respectively.

Kings top gun Manuel Ajoste fired 40 points but missed on a desperation shot as time expired in the second extra session. Lerio Pagarao also chipped in 10 points for the Kings.
