The Northern Marianas College Talent Search Program graduated 42 students from Hopwood Junior High School in ceremonies held at the Multi-Purpose Center early Friday morning.
The Talent Search Program, coordinated with HJHS vice principal Beth Nepaial and Talent Search program director Loraine Sonoda, assists junior high students with their education by identifying and helping individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds who have the potential to succeed in higher education.
The program provides academic counseling to junior high students and encourages them to graduate and continue on to high school.
Assisting the students through the six-week sessions were Talent Search guidance specialist Joan Dubrall, outreach specialist Amelia Manibusan, and tutors Zack Camacho, Peter Pangelinian, Alisa Pangelinian, Jocelyn Itibus, Georgia Salas, Eluene Baza, Hermino Matsumoto, Mayumi Aguon, Theresa Taylor, Roman Benavente, and Leslie Guerrero.
“Of all the things we wanted to teach you students is that learning can be fun. The work we throw at you was not only to make you think, but to also experience the many different ways of learning and also to prepare you for future work as high school students,” Sonoda told the students.
Patrick Torres, who was one of the high achievers throughout the six-week session, said the summer school program has expanded his educational knowledge and helped him develop a more mature outlook.
“Personally, the thing that I had learned about this summer program is that it is good to have changes in life because without changes, life might be hard for people, and if there are changes everything would be easier to do instead of struggling,” he said.
Torres extended his thanks to the teachers, tutors, parents, guardians, and friends for their support.
