Tinian council leads beach cleanup
TINIAN—In an effort to promote and carry on with the Na’ Gasgas Tinian Project, executive director James M. Mendiola Jr. and staff of the 10th Tinian Municipal Council took a trip to Long Beach on Friday, July 16, for a beach cleanup.
With the goal of repeating last year’s feat of cleaning up all of the Northern Beaches on Tinian, the council staff tackled Long Beach with their trademark fervor for picking up trash.
In addition to the usual trash that people leave behind after picnics, this year’s haul included heaps of trash that waves from Typhoon Tingting left along the shoreline.
Despite getting baked under the hot sun, the council’s staff tried their best to collect most of the trash along the shoreline and along the roads leading to the beach.
Already in its fifth year, the Na’ Gasgas Tinian Project has proven beneficial and worthwhile to both visitors and locals on the island of Tinian. Due to the efforts of the program, visitors often return home with memories of the beauty of Tinian’s beaches, and locals are able to take their families to the beaches without the worry of unsanitary conditions.
When asked whether their efforts makes a difference, Mendiola said: “The beach will obviously get dirty between our cleanups, but we’re hoping that our effort will be infectious, perhaps, motivating other people to help in taking better care of our beaches.” (Alex Sandbergen)
