Tudela attends mayors annual meeting
Over 200 mayors from different states and territories converged in Boston, Massachusetts, for the 72nd United States Conference of Mayors Annual Meeting held June 25-29, 2004.
Issues related to homeland security and public safety, economic development and housing, e-governance, prisoner re-entry, Brownfields development, environment, public health, transportation, tax policy, and others were discussed during the meeting.
Attending his second annual mayors conference, Saipan Mayor Juan B. Tudela provided input on important resolutions in the Children, Health and Human Services’ Committee where he is a voting member. These resolutions included Resolution No. 9, National Hunger Awareness Day, to consider for the awareness campaign; and Resolution No. 10, Supporting Resources to Fight AIDS in the United States and Around the World.
The word “territories” was included as it relates to the Ryan White CARE Act, which will be submitted to the U.S. Congress and administration to increase budget funding for critical domestic HIV/AIDS programs in the amount of $574.34 million to the Ryan White CARE Act, Title I, II and III (CNMI is currently receiving Title II AIDS Drug Assistance Program) and $206.7 million for the Minority AIDS Initiative; and an additional $367.1 million to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention for domestic and territories prevention programs.
As a permanent member of the CNMI Council on Physical Fitness and Sports, Tudela expressed his commitment and support in the continuing collaboration between national, state and local governments, non-profit organizations and the private sectors by supporting Resolution No. 10: Supporting Efforts in the Prevention and Treatment of Obesity and Overweight.
In addition, the U.S. Conference of Mayors overwhelmingly supported Resolution No. 4, which strongly encouraged the US Congress to pass the Get Outdoors Act.
“The above resolutions have significant impact in the CNMI departments’ and municipalities’ programs and residents,” Tudela said. (PR)
