CUC’s Sablan unsure about seeking another term
Commonwealth Utilities Corp. chair Herman P. Sablan said he looks forward to having more time for his business, but he would be honored if he gets re-elected today for another term.
CUC will hold its annual election at 2pm today, after its scheduled meeting was postponed last week due to Typhoon Tingting.
“I’ve had a good experience as CUC chairman. It was very challenging. I still want to help as chairman, but I also want to focus on my business, which is very young,” Sablan said in an interview.
Sablan owns the CNMI-USA International Business and Professional College, a postsecondary educational institution at the Nauru Building in Susupe.
Only on its second year, the college has about 40 to 50 full-time students, he said.
“Running a school is not a small job. It needs continuous monitoring and administration. It’s really a lot of work, and it’s one of the reasons why my year as CUC chairman has been very challenging,” Sablan said.
But despite his business concerns, he added that he would be honored if the CUC board members decide to install him for another term as their chair.
He also pledged support for whoever will succeed him, in case he is not re-elected.
Sablan served as CUC board member for a year before becoming chairman last year. He replaced Francisco Q. Guerrero, who was voted as vice chairman and chairman of the CUC committee on operations.
Upgrading the power system and providing 24-hour water supply on Saipan are two of biggest issues currently facing the CUC.
Also part of the CUC board are retired teacher Rufina Miles, Verizon Pacifica’s Velma Ann Palacios, Allen Perez of the Tinian Mayor’s Office, and businessman Joe Torres.
