Traffic offense nails fugitive
Nearly a year after bolting out the CNMI’s immigration detention facility, a Chinese man fell into the hands of authorities when policemen chanced upon him for committing a traffic violation.
Forty-six-year-old Cui Shun Zhe left Saipan for China Saturday pursuant to a deportation order by the Superior Court, according to the CNMI’s immigration enforcement attorney, Eric O’Malley.
O’Malley said lawmen arrested Cui in Garapan last June 26, after police identified him as one of the three Chinese men who escaped from detention on July 27 last year.
Lawmen earlier captured the two other fugitives—Chengao Jin, 44, and Zhang Min, 20—both of whom were deported to China.
Among the three men, Jin first fell when lawmen captured him on Aug. 18 last year, less than a month after the escape. The following Nov. 2, CNMI operatives nabbed Zhang.
Policemen patrolling Saipan ordered Cui’s vehicle to pull over after the latter reportedly committed a traffic violation, O’Malley said. Court proceedings went on to deport Cui, the attorney said.
The three men escaped from detention by removing a grate and climbing through a window. During the escape, the court had a standing deportation order against them and had remanded them to the Immigration detention facility.
