Federal prosecutors asked the U.S. District Court to forfeit in favor of the federal government over $11,000 in U.S. dollars that was seized during law enforcement operations on an illegal casino on Saipan.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Karon V. Johnson filed two separate complaints that sought the forfeiture of $5,118.97 and $6,559.

The first amount represented money confiscated from three Chinese men who were convicted on conspiracy to collect extensions of credit by extortionate means.

The court had sentenced Wan Xiang Chen, Wei Jun Chen and Jia Huan Chen to 78 months each in prison. Authorities accused the three of using guns and sticks to collect on usurious loans from patrons of an illegal casino at the Joy Hotel in Garapan.

Law enforcers seized from them the money when they were arrested pursuant to a warrant sometime in July 2003.

Johnson also asked the court for the forfeiture of some $6,559 in favor of the U.S. government.

The lawyer said the money was seized during the execution of a search warrant at the illegal casino.
