The U.S. District Court has placed a Chinese worker on one-year probation for attempting to unlawfully enter Guam aboard a boat that sailed from Saipan.

Chief Judge Alex R. Munson convicted Wang Jiu Ying on a charge of attempted improper entry by an alien. The judge tasked the worker to perform 200 hours of community service.

During the worker’s sentencing last Thursday, Munson also prohibited Wang from possessing a firearm or controlled substance.

Wang was among 14 Chinese workers who attempted to enter Guam by sailing on a boat from Saipan last December. The boat reportedly reached Guam’s territorial waters, but it had to detour to Rota due to rough seas.

CNMI law enforcers then discovered the failed human smuggling attempt.
