About 73 percent of nearly 80 online respondents agreed that the size of the Public School System’s administrative staff should be cut “in favor of teaching staff.”

Of the respondents who joined a survey quiz at Votations.com, 56 said that reducing the number of administrative staff and increasing the teachers “is a great idea. Let’s do it.”

Only three said that “the status quo is fine” and two said, “It’s a terrible idea.”

Currently PSS has nearly 500 teachers and about the same number of non-teaching staff.

About 32 percent or 25 respondents also said that teachers’ pay must be raised and 25 percent or 20 respondents said the status quo is alright.

About 31 percent or 23 voters favored a guaranteed allocation of 25 percent of the CNMI budget to PSS “regardless of the state of the local economy or other needs of the government.”

In the same survey, 58 respondents or 77 percent said specific performance standards must be set for public schools and that they be ranked publicly, while three respondents said it is a bad idea.

About 70 percent favored to end the practice of rehiring retirees who lack teaching credentials, which is required of off-island hires.

Meantime, 23 percent of respondents said they would want the CNMI politicians discuss pay raises, 21 percent said politicians need to talk about the 25 percent budget guaranty, 19 percent want to hear CNMI political leaders discuss the matter on the rehiring of retirees.
