Wimbledon was not the only tennis tournament cancelled over the weekend, as Typhoon Tingting forced FILATA to cancel Saturday and Sunday matches in the ongoing CIC Tennis Classic.

With the American Memorial Park tennis court appearing more like a swimming pool than an actual sports venue, FILATA president Eli Buenaventura has postponed all scheduled games until weather conditions improve.

“In view of the expected passing of Typhoon Tingting in our area, the tournament committee announces that all scheduled matches for the doubles events Saturday and yesterday are canceled and play will resume as the soon as the weather improves and the court conditions are much better and safer.”

FILATA also advised participants to check the AMP tennis courts bulletin board for future announcements or call Boyet Minor at 323-3081 or Buenaventura himself at 322-5880.

Before the rains fell, the tournament got going Friday with seven matches getting done before Tingting made landfall.

In the men’s 3.0, Hector Benitez and Toz Beltau advanced to the semifinals after hurdling Sathayan and Ramon Angeles, 6-0, 6-2.

Also getting to the third round is the CHC pair of Richard Brostrom and Gary Ramsey. The two fashioned out a 6-0, 7-6 (7-3) win against Rodel Macasinag and Noel Manalang.

Edwin Quismundo and Tanaka also won their quarterfinal match opposite Manny Jardinero and Romy Sotto, 6-2, 6-1.

Action in the men’s 4.0 then saw Art Lopez and Jaime Hagos overcome Robert Coracero and Hector Gutierrez, 1-6, 6-4, 6-4.

Second seed Gerald Narciso and Richard Asuncion got safely into the semis after surviving Buddy Garote and Perry Cacdac, 6-4, 4-6, 6-3, in 4.5 play. Boyet Minor and Alex Martin also are in the round of eight after the two dismissed John Kintaro and Martin Igitol, 6-1, 6-2.

Arlene Osma and Mina Solomon dropped the opening set but played perfect tennis the rest of the way to overcome Ayumi Cajigan and Ayumi Suzuki, 5-7, 6-0, 6-0. The only other women’s 3.0 match that was decided Friday saw Rose Pederson and Gina Lopez win by default.
