In the wee hours of Saturday morning, Kim Jung Young and Mieko Motoyoshi finished ahead of a crowd of 153 runners to win the the11th Annual Tom Picarro Memorial Fun Run, better known as the Silver Streak.

Finishing with a time of 23:48, the 32-year-old cook from Keeraku successfully defended his title from last year to finish first overall. PIC Clubmate and Saipan’s top finisher in this year’s Tagaman, Motoyoshi was the fastest female in the race, crossing the line 16th overall in a mere 29:45.

They were joined by a crowd of runners that ranged in ages from 5-year-old Maxi Braig to the 74-year-young John Joyner.

“It was great! There was great running weather and we had great prizes,” said event coordinator Wolf Mojica.

At 6am, all of the racers gathered together in front of the taxi entrance of the DFS Garapan Galleria to take part in the run in memory of the former president of DFS Saipan and avid runner, P. Thomas Picarro.

The 4.2-mile fun run followed one of the favorite practice courses of the silver-haired man that used to wave at everyone as they drove along Beach Road.

This year there were fewer runners than usual, but that has been mainly attributed to the rash of bad weather belting Saipan. Mojica noted that many of the race regulars were off island at the time of the annual event. The runners started out at the DFS Garapan Galleria traveled south to Quartermaster Road, and then back to the Galleria.

There was an award ceremony at the Galleria following the race where all of the entrants were treated to a race t-shirt and a “goody-bag” courtesy of DFS, and the winners received their prizes from the wife of the former DFS president. Clara Picarro was on hand, having flown in from New York to be a presenter for the event that remembered her husband.
