CNMI National Championships rescheduled
Thanks to all of the rain that the island has received in the couple of weeks, the CNMI National Track and Field Championships, that was scheduled to be held this weekend, has been postponed until next month.
According to the coordinating director for track and field Elias Rangamar, the championships have been pushed back until Saturday, July 17. The schedule of events have not been released as of yet, but there is sure to be a wide array for athletes in all categories.
There will be events for sprinters, distance runners and mid-distance runners alike at the Oleai Sports Complex, but this will be the first year that the competitors will have the benefit of using the new state-of-the art track for their events.
This will be the 14th annual competition, and the events are open to athletes of all ages and levels. Rangamar said that it is likely that there will be a meeting this week to discuss any changes in the format and the scheduling of races. Aside from all of the track and field responsibilities, Rangamar is also preparing to take the men’s CNMI basketball team to the Marianas Basketball Tournament on Saturday, July 3. His counterpart for the women’s team this year is coach Don Blundin. With any luck, both teams will be returning with first place smiles on Sunday, July 11, and that should be an adequate amount of time for Rangamar to have the races on track.
“There have been a lot of other activities going on and the weather has not been very cooperative for them to train, so I feel that it would be unfair to the athletes if we have it this weekend,” said Rangamar.
The CNMI National Championships have been held annually since 1991, and the organizers moving the dates for the event will remain in compliance as they are supposed to have the event every year sometime in June or July.
