HR group to discuss changes in overtime rules

The Society for Human Resource Management has invited lawyer Marcia Schultz, a partner at Carlsmith Ball LLP and former CNMI SHRM chapter president, to speak at the group’s special half-day program on the upcoming changes to the Fair Labor Standards Act.
The U.S. Department of Labor has released its final changes to the Fair Labor Standards Act’s “white-collar” exemption regulations governing the eligibility for overtime and raise the salary threshold for overtime exempt status, as well as numerous other changes. this program will help people understand these changes and how they will affect businesses on-island.
Employers have until August 23, 2004, to comply with the new federal regulations. These changes affect both public and private sector employers in the CNMI.
“Join us to learn about the changes to this important federal employment law and how they affect your organization,” the group said in a statement.
The meeting will be held at the Sandcastle, Hyatt Regency Saipan on Wednesday, June 23, from 8am to 1pm. The cost, including lunch, is $35 for SHRM members and $45 for non-SHRM members. The CNMI Chapter of the Society for Human Resource Management describes itself as the Commonwealth’s foremost professional forum for discussion and training in human resource matters. Recognized as a Superior Merit Chapter, the CNMI branch is composed of human resource professionals from a variety of industries, large and small, who recognize a need for a local society for professionals in the human resources field. The CNMI Chapter is affiliated with the national organization.
