Out of sight, out of mind

In commemorating the 60th anniversary of the Battles of Saipan and Tinian, it is a shame that we in the Pacific region are not afforded the same respect as the European theatre.

Reading through a New York Times article, I was reminded of how little was taught during my school years on the war in the Pacific. Except for Pearl Harbor, most of the history we were told referred to the war in Europe. Learning about the Pacific came from watching the Lee Marvin movies, and other war movies that were being shown those days.

To see this attitude continue, and to find that the United States is not really focusing on the next major power area, Asia, is a big mistake on the part of the powers that be in the U.S. Europe, in an effort to survive economically, has been forced to form a Union of most of the independent countries there. Asia, on the other hand, continues to grow and build, independent of the rest of the world’s woes!

I, like I am sure many of you here in the islands, have heard people on the other side of the phone, asking, “Guam, Saipan, where is that??” or “What country? Never heard of it.”
