Cohen to meet with CNMI leaders next week
Office of Interior Affairs deputy assistant David Cohen would return to Saipan next week to tackle major issues with government leaders and to attend the upcoming Pacific Islands Environmental Conference at the Dai Ichi Hotel Saipan Beach.
Office of Insular Affairs resident director Jeff Schorr said Cohen, who arrived on Saipan Monday night, is currently participating in the ongoing celebration of the 60th anniversary of the World War II Battles of Saipan and Tinian. Cohen is scheduled to leave afterwards for Guam.
Schorr said Cohen would return on Sunday in time for 23rd Pacific Islands Environmental Conference on Monday at 8am. The conference is to be conducted by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency in hopes to raise awareness on how to design effective environmental awareness campaigns in the Pacific region.
While on Saipan, Cohen would meet with Gov. Juan N. Babauta and Lt. Gov. Diego T. Benavente to discuss two major issues affecting the CNMI, Schorr added.
“I don’t have the complete details, but the deputy assistant would be meeting with the CNMI leaders to discuss two important issues. What are these, I don’t have complete information,” said the resident director in an interview yesterday.
Cohen has been instrumental in various projects in the Commonwealth, particularly the recent signing of the increased funding assistance for the Compact-Impact guaranteed funding in the next 10 years. Cohen has been in full support also of the non-voting delegate issue currently being tackled at the U.S. Senate for an oversight review.
