Participants under the supervision of the Garapan Youth Learning Center staff and Americorps members began collecting trash from the beach area behind the Garapan Mobil/McDonalds Service Station to Micro Beach.

As part of the GYLC Summer Program, beach cleanup started on Tuesday, June 8, and will continue every Tuesday of the week until the end of the summer program.

Children from age 6 to 15 have the opportunity to learn more about their environment, and be more active with the beautification efforts. Not only do they help the environment and receive money for their efforts, they also learn about time management, organization, communication, and social interaction.

After the beach cleanup, participants armed with a shovel and pick learned the proper way of planting trees, taught by Lawrence Rosario, and Jun Teregeyo. Aa total of four trees were planted at the Smiling Cove Marina parking area. (Lucia Henry)
