Officials of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency will hold a workshop discussing the agency’s Brownfields program from 1:30pm to 3pm on June 21 at the U.S. EPA’s 23rd Pacific Islands Environmental Conference at the Dai-Ichi Hotel on Saipan, CNMI.

The free workshop, which is open to the public, will include discussions aimed at redevelopment agencies and developers looking at industrial sites with possible contamination. Steve Simanonok of the EPA’s Pacific Southwest Region will lead the workshop.

Simanonok will provide an overview of the EPA’s Brownfields program and the Brownfields grant application process, followed by a case study of the ongoing Brownfields reuse assessment for the Puerto Rico dump, with discussion on the assessment process, alternatives and selected options for the site.

Brownfields revitalization provides communities with the tools to reduce environmental and health risks, reuse abandoned properties, take advantage of existing infrastructure, create a stronger local tax base, attract new businesses and jobs, create new recreational areas, and reduce the pressure to develop open spaces.

To register, visit http://www.epa.gov/region9/cross_pr/islands/con04/agenda-reg04.pdf for a registration form and other information on the conference, or contact coordinator Pacific Rim Concepts at (808) 864-9812.

Simanonok is available to meet with anyone interested in Brownfields on June 21-25. To set up a meeting, contact Dave Hodges or Ray Masga of the CNMI’s Division of Environmental Quality at (670) 664-8500. For more information on Brownfields, visit http://www.epa.gov/brownfields
