Saipan lass graduates from Georgetown U
The prestigious Georgetown University in Washington, D.C. held its 205th graduation ceremony on the morning of May 22 and among the hundreds of proud and excited graduates receiving their diploma was Merced Aldan Ada of Saipan.
Ada, an alumni of Marianas High School class of 1999 and a valedictorian of her class, was conferred a bachelor or arts degree with a major in English and minor in Government.
Merced Ada is the daughter of Lilly Aldan of Saipan, who attended the ceremony with her son John David Ada, Rita A. Sablan and daughter Manuela Sablan, and Rosaline Aldan Mantanona, both aunts of Ada. Washington Rep. Pete A. Tenorio also attended the commencement ceremonies at the distinguished Catholic university with the family.
“I am very proud of the academic accomplishments of Merced. She is a fine example of how our young students have overcome many challenges to complete their education, despite having to leave their families and home for several years” said Tenorio. “Merced is surely an inspiration to all of us, and for students in the NMI who aspire to follow in her footsteps.”
Following graduation, Ada will be heading back to Saipan to spend some time with her family. She will then prepare to further her education by going back to school to obtain a doctorate in English and be involved in post-graduate research work relating to her field.
“I feel very fortunate to have my mother’s and family’s support throughout my years in college. There were many difficult and trying moments, but I managed to learn about myself, my capabilities, and what I wanted to accomplish while at Georgetown,” said Ada.
