ESPN to air math contest
An hour-long program on the 2004 MATHCOUNTS National Competition Countdown Round will air on ESPN2 at noon ET Thursday, June 3 (Friday, Saipan time) and rebroadcast at 11pm on Saturday, June 5.
This coverage will heighten the prestige of math achievement as a school sport and impact the visibility of the MATHCOUNTS program on a national and local level.
Focused primarily on the drama of the Countdown Round, the program highlights the energy and excitement of the Mathletes as they test their math skills.
In an e-mail message to MATHCOUNTS Coordinators and NSPE State Society Executives, Peggy Drane invited them to catch the program.
“We hope you have an opportunity to view the program when it airs or to tape it for a later viewing. You won’t want to miss the excitement of the event!” she said.
ESPN2’s Cold Pizza will also conduct a live interview with two members of the Illinois team, 2004 MATHCOUNTS National Team Champions, the morning of June 3. President Bush himself had personally congratulated the National Champions and their coaches in the Oval Office last May 18.
ESPN2 is currently planning to broadcast the 2003 and 2004 MATHCOUNTS National Competitions back to back on Friday, June 11, beginning at 11am ET.
