Tinian welcomes home local boy
Under clear skies and a warm Sunday sun, the small commuter plane carrying local boy Sgt. Nazario Borja pulled up to family and friends, who were all anxiously awaiting to finally see for themselves that he is okay.
Deployed to Iraq on November of 2003, Borja was severely injured when a mortar round exploded inside his camp, killing a comrade and nearly ending his own. With wounds to his chest, arms, abdomen and legs, shrapnel also punctured a main artery, filling his lungs with blood. Thanks to the quick response of personnel at the scene, doctors were able to reconnect the artery and save his life.
Last Sunday, Borja finally arrived on Tinian, back into the welcoming arms of his family, relatives, friends, and the Tinian community. Among those who were present to welcome him back were Tinian Mayor Francisco M. Borja, the JROTC unit from Tinian High School and the newly formed Tinian U.S. Veterans Association.
In Iraq, Borja was assigned to the 296th Brigade Support Battalion. His duties encompassed a wide range of activities necessary to the unit. His most recent was being part of a force fighting insurgents in Falujah.
Others on hand to welcome Borja was Sgt. Gregory Cing, son of former Sen. David Cing, who was also sent to Iraq and was slightly injured by a shrapnel to the left arm. Also home on leave and present to greet Borja was Specialist Grace Cing.
The homecoming for Borja was very heartwarming, bringing a tear to all those who went to the Tinian West Airport to welcome home their hometown hero.
After introductions and speeches from Mayor Borja and Capt. Santos, the Tinian High School JROTC instructor, family and friends were free to welcome Borja individually with a hand shake and a hug. Afterwards, Borja, who was still in bandages and was using a cane for support, proceeded to a welcome home party held in his honor at his families’ residence. (Joey C. Charfauros)
