Jenny Ngircheungel, and Normaine Pangelinan, both juniors at Marianas High School, will attend the 2004 Leeward Community College Classic Math & Science Summer Program from June 12 to July 25, 2004.

The purpose of the Math & Science Summer Program is to motivate and excite students to consider careers in fields requiring math or science, to increase academic skills, to prepare students for college programs, and provide guidance for academic, career, and personal needs. Generally, it is a summer, residential, pre-college program offering coursework in Math, Marine Science, Computer Science, Language Arts, Literature, Hawaiian language, and Guidance.

This year, Leeward Community College designed their summer program accordingly to specific grade level. As juniors, Jenny and Normaine will enroll in science courses such as Forensics Science or Biotechnology.

Jenny is the daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Charito Ngircheungel of Dandan.

When asked about her feelings about going to Hawaii, she said “It will be my first time to go farther then Guam, but I will take this opportunity to visit another place and learn more about college life. I didn’t expected to be selected, but I took the opportunity and applied for the program.”

Jenny wants to pursue a career in Biochemisty. “This subject interests me and will like to pursue it as a career. I hope to work in hospital and apply my skills as a biochemist.”

Getting good grades in her high school studies is a priority, but Jenny still finds time to play basketball or baseball. “Playing sports is one way to release stress.”

Normaine is the daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Norman Pangelinan of Chalan Piao.

When asked about being selected to attend this year’s Leeward Community College Classic Math & Science Summer Program, she replied, “I didn’t think that I will be selected because at first I was an alternate, then later Ms. Jane Tudela, UB Guidance Specialist, received an e-mail stating that I was selected.”

Normaine plans to attend college and pursue a career in medicine. “I want to become a pediatrician because when I was younger I would take care of my brothers and sisters.”

Currently, Normaine holds a rank of cadet Lieutenant Colonel as Commander of the Dolphin Battalion. To soothe her mind after a long day in school, Normaine listens to contemporary music.

Jenny and Normaine are participants of the Northern Marianas College Upward Bound Program, a Federal TRIO program tasked with the responsibility to prepare and motivate qualified high school students for post secondary education.
