To Team 9, Cyphers and Faulker, it’s just a game
Teams took turns slapping each other’s balls around Thursday night as the fifth consecutive Coors Light Co-ed Beach Volleyball League continued on the sand courts behind the Pacific Islands Club.
Team 9, Cyphers and Faulker moved forward, Gansha (3-3), Givity (1-4), and That’s Not Yogurt (0-5) took three lefts, and Cleveland Steamers (3-2), Rusty Slinky’s (2-3), and Government Cheese (1-4) got the gunk out from between their toes.
The night’s first sandstorm pitted the mighty Team 9 and the anti-mighty That’s Not Yogurt in a three-set two-step. It should have come as no surprise that the team with the most points for (181) clobbered the team with the fewest (98). It was all Nine-time, as the first place Team ate That’s Not Yogurt in three straight sets: 5-11, 5-11 and 7-11. This is the fifth consecutive win for the Nine, and they have only two games remaining. Team Gurt has three games left to break its five game losing streak, and they’ll have their next shot on Thursday, June 3, when they take on Government Cheese at 8pm. Team 9 also sees its next action Thursday in the 6pm match-up with Faulker.
The second pair of teams that do-si-do’d in the sand was Cyphers and Givity. The battle between the top of the league and the bottom of the barrel looked as if there would be a major upset, as Givity flipped Cyphers in the first set 11-4. Perhaps Cyphers was still suffering a hangover from its first loss last Tuesday. If that was the case, they quickly shrugged it off, coming back to beat Givity 11-7 and 11-8 in the final two sets.
With the win, Cyphers managed to keep pace with the team that unseated them last time out, and stay in the regular season champion race. Their next opponent is Cleveland Steamers on Tuesday, June 1 at 6pm. Givity on the other hand, is looking forward to this Tuesday’s game with Rusty Slinkys at 8pm, for a chance to move up in the rankings.
The final set of sets had Faulker playing Gansha. It was offense versus defense as Gansha is tied for the most points for in the league with Team 9 (181) while Faulker has the fewest points against (98).
Gansha was smoking out of the gate, taking down Faulker 6-11 in the first set. It was just a game to Faulker, as they regrouped to take the final two sets 11-9 and 11-7. Faulker is just a half game back of the leaders and is on a four game win streak. Their next game is against Government Cheese Tuesday, June 1, at 7pm. Gansha was unable to put two wins together again this season, as their inconsistent record of 3-3 would indicate. They hit the courts on Thursday, June 3, at 7pm, when they try to take a bite out of Government Cheese.
Games are played Tuesdays and Thursdays at 6pm, 7pm, and 8pm through the end of the season on Thursday, June 13. The team with the best win-loss record after eight games will be crowned the regular season champ, and a single-elimination tournament will be played Tuesday, June 15, for additional prizes.
Each team of seven players is permitted four players on the court, with the stipulation that one female be on the court at all times.
All the side-outs you can handle will be doled out again tonight at the PIC. If you would like further information about the Coors Light 4-Person Beach Volleyball League 2004, contact the Pacific Islands Club by calling 235-6231.
