Sylvester K. Laniyo, Upward Bound student and sophomore at Saipan Southern High School, made it to the Who’s Who Among American High School Student for the academic year 2003-2004.

As such, Laniyo can apply for scholarship with other college bound students the through College Referral Service, where his academic biography will be printed to inform educational institutions of his honorary award.

In addition to the Upward Bound Program, Laniyo is a member of SSHS Close Up. He said he is proud to be a member of his high school band and the Pacific Winds band. Laniyo plays trombone for both bands.

Upon receiving the e-mail from Who’s Who Among American High School students, Laniyo said he felt grateful and thankful for being nominated.

“There are other students who deserve such recognition and I didn’t think that my achievements were interesting. Nevertheless, I would like to thank those who were there when I needed help and encouragement to continue my dream of going to college and major in Interactive Media or Computer,” he said.

Laniyo is a participant of the Northern Marianas College Upward Bound Program, a federal TRIO program tasked with responsibility to prepare and motivate qualified high school students for postsecondary education.
