Calvo to represent NMI at 2004 NFL Nationals
Marianas Baptist Academy student Roselle Calvo will be leaving for Utah on June 11 to represent the CNMI at the national level of the 2004 National Forensics League.
Calvo is an honor-roll sophomore and has been the president of her class in the past four years, a youth senator for the sixth CNMI Youth Congress, and the chairperson of its Ways and Means Committee.
Though only 15 years old, Calvo has contributed her time and effort to numerous organizations. When she is not busy with that, she could be found helping underprivileged children with reading difficulties.
Having been selected to attend the Junior Statesman Summer School program at Yale University, Calvo said she is honored to attend such a prestigious educational institution.
While there, she will be studying two college-level courses, AP U.S. Government & Politics and Honors Speech Communication, with distinguished college professors. She will also be given the opportunity to visit New York and participate in a special speakers’ program, which will take advantage of the vast resources available in the city such as foreign affairs at the United Nations, the media at The New York Times, economic policymaking on Wall Street, and the dynamics of politics in New York.
However, she would need to raise at least $3,000 for her tuition and transportation and this is where Calvo is hoping that the community could chip in with donations. She believes in hard work and the financial rewards that follow; however, she is looking into financial assistance from any source available. For those who would like to help her, they can call 235-5465.
