Mount Carmel School’s Theatre Club will stage its 17th theatrical production, Taming the Shrew, on Friday, May 21, and Saturday, May 22, at 6pm each night at GIG Discotheque in Garapan.

The production is a punk rock musical adapted by the school’s Advanced Placement English Class from William Shakespeare’s comedy, The Taming of the Shrew. This is the club’s 17th production since its inception eight years ago.

The story of Taming the Shrew closely follows Shakespeare’s original. Several boys at Padua High School pine for Bianca, a local beauty whose father will not allow her to date unless her sister, Kate, also dates. Unfortunately for Bianca’s suitors, Kate, an anti-social guitarist in a punk rock band, is opposed to dating, men, and romance. The story unfolds when Bianca’s suitors plot a scheme to get Kate to date. But will the anti-dating, anti-romance Kate fall for the scheme? Or will she fall in love?

A highlight of the production will be live punk rock music played by student musicians John Del Rosario, Sweeda Glad, Jon Igitol, Steven Johnson, Andrew Moses, and Sherman Santos. The production’s emphasis on music prompted the cast and crew to perform at GIG Discotheque, which has recently built a new band stage.

The club’s performance at GIG will also be the first time that a theatrical production is staged at GIG. Such an innovation echoes the Theatre Club’s performance of Grease at the Hard Rock Café in Garapan in January 2000, which also marked the first time that a theatrical production was staged at a Hard Rock Café restaurant.

Taming the Shrew is being directed by Theatre Club veterans Karen Cabrera and Josh Gibson. The show stars other club veterans, Sweeda Glad as Kate, Deniece Santos as Bianca, and Sherman Santos as Luke, as well as club newcomer, Andrew Moses, as Peter.

Admission for Taming the Shrew is $5. Tickets are available at the school Business Office. For more information on the show, call 234-6184.
